Great tacos, one of the best in town. I had the goat and chicken tacos. They were made to order, hot fresh and tasty. They came with onions and cilantro, not all that lettuce and tomato to get in the way. It was a prefect compliment. The tacos are a tad smaller than other local places. I usually get 2 at most places, I needed 3 here. My only complaint is that it was VERY cold inside. I had to eat in my car, but it was very cold today.

Went to get some tacos today for my birthday! I got a barbacoa taco and an asada quesadilla. And of course a guava Jarritos! The food was amazing. The barbacoa is so good, it was very flavorful and tender. The quesadilla was huge! I liked it a lot. I would probably get barbacoa next time, just because it was so good. The only complaint I have (and the reason I didn't give 5 stars) is that the wait for our takeout food was pretty long, about 30-35 minutes at 1pm on a Monday. It was worth it for me, but if you're in a hurry or have a short lunch break this might not be the best option. Or call ahead with your order! Everything is very fresh and authentic, tacos are $2-$3 each and the quesadilla was $7, so it's a very cheap meal and I was definitely full! I even shared the quesadilla. I will be back!

Taqueria San Jose is the best food joint in GR, as far as I am concerned. Fernando slings a mean taco. Like any good thing, the food here takes time. Order a horchata, an take a sip while you wait. Oh, and don't forget the dry heat sauce.

One of the few places I will never get sick of. Love their simplicity, they have great food, and are always friendly. If you're looking for a quick dining experience this may not fit your needs--sometimes, particularly on the weekends, it can get pretty busy and they run out of seating real quick. It's always with it though, and they have great horchata!

The food here is really delicious and authentic tasting. It is definitely a good place to go if you want something tasty on the go.... However- the service is really awkward. I got a few items that had the incorrect ingredients, and my bill didn't make too much sense until I realized I had gotten more than I thought (the menu says "tamales" in plural, I assumed that meant 2, but instead I was charged for each tamale. I'm not sure if that's because of incorrect grammar or incorrect math.) The menu was kind of confusing too. Many items didn't have any descriptions, so even if I wanted to try something I had nothing to go off of. It also seemed expensive once the bill added up. I spent $20 for two people. Give it a try if you're in the area, but Tacos El Caporal still holds as the best Mexican Restaurant in the area in my opinion!

This tiny place on Division is easy to miss, but don't! It has some of the best Mexican food in GR - or anywhere else! The shredded beef tacos are fresh and off-the-hook delicious. The chicken tacos are similarly good. I also got a chorizo torta, and I was glad I did - so full of flavor! The homemade sauces are great and the grilled pepper was just spicy enough to make me smile. They even had a cold tamarind soda to wash it down. Very reasonably priced and friendly staff. I will be back again and again!!! I can eat a lot, but I wish I had an extra stomach for this place!

Waiting 20 minutes in an empty place for a burrito that's almost entirely lettuce (see photo) doesn't deserve more than one star. Update: If you want great authentic Mexican food head to Tacos El Cuñado! Only about five minutes from here, best I've ever had in my life!

I'm a fan of Mexican food...the real stuff...not the crap that Taco Bell serves. I've been to most of the authentic taco stands in town, and this one is my favorite, hands down! Plenty of choices for tacos (steak, chicken, goat, tripe, cactus...I've tried them all and haven't been disappointed with any of them). The staff is friendly and don't get frustrated with me since I can't speak any Spanish...I'm sure they get a good laugh at how I pronounce some of the stuff on the menu. If the food sucked I'd be offended. Seriously, though, they are awesome people there. Atmosphere is quaint...seating for 10 or so inside, picnic tables outside under the canopy for when the weather is nice. Friday evenings around dinner time are like a party in the parking lot...people enjoying good food and just hanging out. This place is as good as any Mexican food I've had in Mexico! Even my little girls, who do not like spicy Mexican food, eat up the cheese quesadillas here. So, don't make a run for the border when authentic Mexican food is right here in your own backyard. Added bonus: you don't have to worry about drug cartels.

Everything, every...is ok at this spot. I love tacos and theirs is exactly what I want. I just feel full and want to eat more. Come here with my husband, that's a great time. Price is alsso very reasonable (For me it's cheap), believe me!

  • Tony F.

These folks are firing on all cylinders. You order at the counter top and the folks are super friendly. I ordered a Steak, Al Pastor, and La Lengua tacos and all three were great. My usual test is if the La Lengua tacos are good, they pretty much know how to do everything else well. When you first drive up, parking is pretty relaxed, I parked to the right. Indoor seating is at a premium during the colder months, but there is plenty of bench seating during the summer to sit outside. They also have some house made salsa that they'll have in bottles on the table and both were epic. Get past the decor and you will have a pretty epic meal on the cheap in GR.

This is my favorite restaurant in Grand Rapids. I'm still working my way through the menu, but it's so hard to try new things when my usuals are so amazing. By far my favorite things that I've tried are the chicken tacos and pork tamales. I've tried most of the meats in taco form, still need to try the goat and the vegetarian options. The grilled pepper that comes along with your order is spicy and citrusy and the horchata is the most perfect cinnamony creamy glass of goodness. The man who I think is the owner, Fernando, is so kind and sweet. He has shared his food with me and given me the hot sauce he makes just for himself several times. He's always there with a big smile and makes this white girl feel welcomed into an authentic mexican place. I love Taqueria San Jose. Writing this has convinced me to go get it for dinner tonight :)

Hands down THEE best place in town for authentic mexican food. You cannot go wrong. You might want to plan on getting your order as take-out since there are only four or five tables, but VERY VERY good food. The Mexican couple that owns it appears to be doing all the cooking and they are super cool, friendly and caring.

If you want authentic Mexican you must try this place. After traveling to Mexico for work I often crave real authentic Mexican food. This place delivers with great Tacos, Burritos, and Tortas. Setting is unique in an old drive-in and parking is tight. Walk up ordering and seating outside. No restrooms. This place is worth it!

    (5)
  • Gretchen D.

Fantastic tacos. We always get al pastor, but this time I also tried a couple pollo tacos. Wow--the flavor of the chicken was amazing. Tacos are cheap. Not much ambiance here--but really cheap delicious tacos. Love this place.

  • Derek B.

The food was good. A little pricy for Mexican food. Their burritos don't come wet which was a bit disappointing. I'm happy with the quality of food but dissatisfied with the prices. Their customer service lacked. I ordered two pork tamales as well and received both chicken. They were good but I was looking forward to pork tamales. I would come back but there are better options in Grand Rapids.

  • Peter M.

We drove far to this place and it did not disappoint!!! After Tacos De Corporal decided that they don't care about their food or customer service any longer I was left with a void for good Mexican fare!!! Small menu that leaves it open for interpretation which is great! Friendly staff was great and there's a sweet picture of an old GRPD car on the wall. I had the chorizo tacos and they were so good I may be hard pressed to try anything else!

Best tacos in West MI - tastes like taco trucks and taquerias in California (that's an epic compliment) ***By the way, I used Yelp to find Taqueria San Jose based on the reviews it had received (because it is generally not close to my proximity), and the ratings don't lie. Now I often find myself going out of my way to get some tacos from Taqueria San Jose 15 miles away.

  • David R.

Stopped in here on lunch hour. Small, only 4 tables. Plenty of outdoor seating in warmer temps. Had the chicken and lengue tacos. UNBELIEVABLE! these were the best tacos I have ever had. Highly recommend for authentic Mexican lovers.

This is hands down the best taco place in Grand Rapids. seriously. it is SO good. I do not eat meat, and dealing with very authentic resturaunts can sometimes be a hassle but here they are very accomidating. The lime salted roasted jalapenos are fantastic, sometimes they dont put them on the side but be sure to ask for one and they'll happily give it to you. i usually recommend three tacos to any newcomers. my meat eating boyfriend loves the steak tacos. my other meat eating friend says the chicken isn't the best, but i'll wait to weigh on that until my guy tries it. the beans, i'm told, are vegetarian. i'd highly recommend ordering the veggie burrito with cactus, it's great. when they first opened they used less lettuce - so if you're vegetarian and looking for it to be authentic be sure to tell them to hold the lettuce. the veggie quesadilla was really good too, again, be sure to order it without lettuce. my meat eating friends love the tamales and my guy says the torta's were really good. the fish tacos are pretty good too, awesome with the green sauce. the gorditas here are incredible, just incredible, they're totally the best i've ever had anywhere, ever. however -i'm assuming their deep fryer broke - they never have them avaliable. how i miss them... the best part about this place is the hot sauces. being vegetarian, most mexican food is generally the same - they all use similar beans and rice - but the hot sauces are so amazingly excellent here i can't recommend them enough. also, if you dont eat hot sauce some of the charm of the food is a bit lost. i was obsessed with the green sauce for a while, but now i've moved onto the "orange" sauce as they call it. it's the hottest but just incredible. i wish they bottled these sauces, i would totally buy them. in fact, i think i will mention that to the owner, since he knows us and is always super friendly! also, the only time they ever messed up my order was on cinco de mayo, otherwise they're always right on. wish they made veggie tamales. maybe i'll ask.

Authentic. Burrito's - veggie, pork and chicken all were liked. Tacos- chicken and Assad were terrific as well.

  • Kerry F.

Decided to try it on Saturday and just beat the crazy lunch rush. We ordered the chips & salsa, and 4 tacos (goat, tripe, cactus and barbacoa) it was so, good. The salsa is freshly made and bursting with fresh cilantro and tomatoes. The 3 hot sauces are excellent, we both agreed the darker, speckled orange was the best. The shells authentic but were a little greasy but so worth the indulgence. The day was nice and we sat outside and the service was fast. It looks a little rough but the food is worth the lack of aesthetics.

  • Nikki S.

Great service, even better food. I come myself but since I've introduced some coworkers to it we order for lunch sometimes too, and they are SO patient and more than accommodating with our multiple orders/separate pay situation. It's appreciated. As for the food, it's simple.. I spent years in LA and these tacos are the best in GR.

  • Joey G.

I've been coming to this place for over a year and I can tell you it's insanely authentic Mexican that one would only expect to find in...well, Mexico. But the fact that we have this diamond in the rough establishment in West Michigan makes it that more special. While the reviews all touch on the greatness of this place-personally...for me, it's the only tacos that truly hit the spot on all levels. And that's saying a lot when I'm nearly 15 miles away with loads of other mex hotspots along the way. However, for being mainly a takeout restaurant it has on multiple occasions giving me a busy signal when calling in an order or the order gets slightly messed up. For being as popular as it's gotten I would recommend hiring a bilingual who can take orders and effectively relay orders to the owner/chef who is the true star of the show.

  • Joel J.

Their food is good. But I don't like the location so much. Most of the seating is outside. The inner seating was at capacity with people ordering to go when I went. We thought it would make a good spot for Cinco de Mayo but it wasn't what we expected. Order to delivery time was set at an expectation of 25 to 30 minutes. Actual time was 43 minutes. While I admit the the "spirit of Cinco de Mayo" is a rather elusive description I thin the "Merry Chriatmas" sign still up in May was a pretty good indication. This was not the place to find it. We received our food and ate it. It was simply okay, but not a Mexican resteraunt j would reccomend.

  • Lorraine F.

My sister and I went there tonight and loved it. It was a little bit of a wait but if you get their menu next time you can order and pick it up. Authentic Mexican food at a little hole in wall... My kind of place to eat.

  • Lindsay C.

So good - I love Mexican food in all forms, really but this place is awesome. I had a carne taco and a cactus taco, and it was out of this world on both accounts. My partner had tacos with carne and barbacoa, and they were outstanding. There is basically no seating here, just a few tables inside, although there's more room outside to sit. I'd sit on the roof for these tacos.

  • Derrick V.

The burritos are some of the best I have had. If you ever find yourself wanting Spanish food, this should be a go to choice. The hours are awesome and the people are polite and welcoming.

  • Kari Z.

This is the best mexican out there in the GR area. Very simple but well done. LOVE the Gorditas...a bit of a wait but well worth it. Tamales and tacos good too. Can't say enough good things.

  • Crystal S.

As a Mexican Florida native, this place was home. Very authentic. The tacos were delish and the burrito my brother got was huge! They have the best barbacoa I've had since moving to MI. I would definitely recommend this place and will be back...several times!

The best taco place around!! The tacos are amazing! Super fresh and flavorful. The staff was great and very helpful. If you are looking for authentic tacos, this is the place for you.

Best tacos in town. I love the salsa verde. The tamales are delicious too. The people running this business are very nice. I am so happy to have this restaurant in my neighborhood.

Some of the best tacos I've had!!! Just as good (if not better) as the taquerias in Chicago. I'm in GR for the weekend and saw this place on Yelp. If it's getting a solid 5 stars, then it must be good. And it really was. Thanks Yelpers! I love taquerias that offer more than just steak and chicken and San Jose has just that. I got the goat, steak, tripe, and chorizo. As much as I love me some good Mexican steak, the goat and tripe tacos stole the show here. The tacos are served the way they're supposed to- with just onions and cilantro. My mouth is salivating as I'm remembering the deliciousness. The waitress (also the cashier) suggested the orange colored sauce with the goat. It was a great combo, but beware. It was very hot! I prefer the more mild taste of the other sauces. However, all the sauces were good and tasted home made. You can really taste the love that was put into each taco. The exterior isn't the most inviting, but isn't what's inside that counts?? The owner came out to say hi and ask us how we liked the food and to invite us back again. If I'm ever in Grand Rapids or passing by, I will definitely come back! For you locals, please support this amazing little taqueria.

New favorite Mexican food! I love their vegetarian tacos (they don't come with avocado but you'll barely miss it) and the salsas they provide are sooooo good. It's also affordable - similar prices to Qdoba or Chipotle except this is authentic. Try the roasted jalapeño on the side if you like it spicy. One last note - since this place is becoming so popular, we often have to wait about 30 minutes for our food. Call ahead.

Nopalesssss. Yes! Finally a delicious and truly authentic joint serving up cactus tacos. With lime and cilantro, yes please..! Besides my beloved nopales tacos, the barbacoa, al pastor and chicken tacos all looked and smelled gorgeous. Seeing as I dont eat meat, I learned from my husband that yes indeed - all three were very well received. Goat is on the menu, and besides tacos we have burritos and tortas to choose from. Jarritos, coca cola, horchata and sidral are happy accompaniments - but if you opt for any of the sauces or grilled fresh pepper you may want to steer clear of the carbonated drinks. I don't know if you've ever followed up a spicy bite with fizz, but it isn't pleasant. One more reason I love me some of that horchata! I love how small this place is, four tables- tops. It is in an old drive in - drive thru type building and just has plenty of crusty charm. When ordering at the window you can see (and smell!!)the various meats being grilled behind the counter. The nopales are well-seasoned and very good. Another word of caution on those sauces, if you are not a lover of spicy things be forewarned to add these sparingly at first. The grilled pepper on the side has phenomenal flavor but packs a sneaky punch. All around a good hole in the wall kinda place for a quick lunch or snack. Must.come.back.soon......

This place is authentic Mexican food with all of the authentic meats. I have not been let down yet. I can't wait to have a party catered.

Hole in the wall. Loved it. I had 5 of the 7 tacos on the menu; shredded beef, sliced steak, barbacoa, chicken, and chorizo. They were all outstanding. Great authentic flavors. It was very busy. Had to wait 30 minutes during the lunch hour. Will definitely be back.

  • Emily Z.

Super fresh and flavorful Mexican food and a bargain price! While you are ordering you can see the steak and other meats being prepared in the kitchen. Tacos are $1.75 each +.25 for avocado, so worth it! Served traditional with cilantro, onions and lime. The Steak was the clear winner though the barbacoa was great as well! Horchata for $1.50 to wash it all down! Only about 5 small tables but that's okay because they did mostly carry-out while we were there. The staff was very warm and friendly! Wish I lived closer!

    (5)
  • Christine L.

The quesadillas are good. The tamales are really good. I would like for the tacos to be more flavorful. I also think they are a bit pricey for a taqueria.

    (4)
  • Deelilah J.

Really good food for pretty standard/reasonable pricing. I like their salsa, it's really good and not typical. You can see the seeds from the chiles in it and it has a nice subtle burn. They don't overstuff their tacos which I like. Limited seating inside, it seems like more of a take out place. You can see them start on your order literally as your ordering it. A nice alternative to those faux-Mexican joints littering Division though those are good sometimes as well of course.

    (5)
  • Amanda L.

I'm giving it 5 stars for the food because it really is as ridiculously good as all the reviews say. Fresh, authentic, Mexican at its best. Had 3 chicken tacos and was stuffed after 2. Finished my 3rd taco just because I couldn't say no. But I have to be honest and say 2 stars for location and dining experiance. Very small inside seating area. The seating area is also where the order window is so when it got busy it got uncomfortably tight. Most people appear to get it to go here. Still, its worth the trip for the food- I'll be back

    (5)
  • Eric R.

Great tacos! Authentic and delicious. I had a beef taco and a shredded beef taco. Service was quick, the three sauces were excellent. Not some place you want to go for a fancy dinner as the atmosphere was simple and "lunch counter-y". Put on your blue jeans and t-shirt and show up for some great food.

Where do I begin this review?...I am from Houston, & I love tacos de barbacoa...growing up, we would eat that every Sunday! Since I've moved up North (Michigan), I have found it difficult to find ANY Mexican food that is as delicious as in Texas, let alone barbacoa...until I tried this place! The tacos were delicious! The tortas, the quesadillas, everything! 2 thumbs up! :) This is my new regular spot when the craving strikes!

  • Paul D.

This is my regular taqueria when in Grand Rapids. There are a few secrets that make these tacos amazing -- the tortillas are heated on the griddle in hot oil and always served with a 'copia', or second tortilla, to prevent blowouts. The al pastor, barbacoa(when they have it) have great flavor and moisture. The chorizo is delicious-salty, bits that are crispy and just a little greasy! Portions of meat in tacos are handsome and the onions, cilantro and limes are cut daily -- you will see no brown peel on the edges of the limes from pre-cutting at this place. The horchata is one of the best I've had. Down side is no beer but you can BYO. The people are always pleasant too. Disfrutalo!

  • Andrew P.

Seriously the best tacos in the world. I try to eat here at least once a week and sometimes that still isn't enough.

  • Jake R.

this little whole-in-the-wall is perhaps one of the best taquerias i have ever visited. this being said i lived in the center of a mexican hood in LA for years and there is no lack of good tacos there. the authenticity is as true as can be. i have tried most of their tacos but even after more than a few visits, there is more to try. the goat tacos are fantasticly flavorful and the cactus tacos are definitely something to try. i strongly suggest having the flan for dessert. it's absolutely delicious and i must have for anyone who has not tried flan before. taqeuria san jose is one if the landmark restaurants of grand rapids and a place anyone living in or visiting grand rapids must try.

  • Andy O.

The food was a definite 5 star. However, it was 0 degrees outside and the room where we ate was very cold. Back to the food...we had steak, tongue, goat and chicken tacos. All rocked!! We had a tamale which was good and the side of rice and beans was very good as well. Don't hesitate to go. The people working there were very friendly.

Best food you will ever eat! Great in the summer, they have a fair amount of outdoor seating. You can also get a lot for your money as well.

After attempting a tacolicious adventure in the heart of Mission district, Mexican town in San Francisco and trying probably the most popular tacquerias around, I have to say that this place is on par with any other places in San Francisco. Highly recommend for THE best tacqueria in GR.

  • Nick P.

Secret is out. Finally just going to add my 5 to the pile. Best tacos al pastor and beef steak tacos in town. Ask for a grilled jalapeño on the side, since I think only the regulars might get one by default. They range from delightful, to WOAH that was kinda almost maybe too hot? Ouch. Awesome. Also, the definitely cater. My best man rolled these gentleman to my bachelor party packing 250 tacos with all the fixings. It was majestic... Quite majestic. Thank you Mr. San Jose and your team. You are incredible.

    (5)
  • Mr. F.

How do you not give this establishment 5 stars?! I recommend the tongue and cactus tacos if you are feeling adventurous. What's more are the Jarritos sodas served alongside your meal. Importantly, they do not present these fabulous drinks until your food is ready. There is very limited seating in the winter, but it is well worth the trip year-round. Outdoor seating is reminiscent of an old 1970s drive-in A&W or Sonic. For the best Mexican food in Grand Rapids, hands down, visit La Taqueria San Jose.

  • Chad F.

I am hooked! This is the greatest taqueria in Grand Rapids, maybe the country. The small store-front/drive-in is hard to get thru when it's crowded, but no big deal. The service is fast and friendly. The food is divine. The carne asada is great, as is the al pastor (a family fav)...it's also fun to try to cactus. I haven't tried Lengua yet, but I'm sure I will. You have to try this place!

  • Sara C.

If you are looking for authentic Mexican food in GR, this is the place. My brother brought me here after hearing about their awesome tacos from some of his coworkers. I was super impressed with how many vegetarian options they have & would suggest the cactus tacos for sure. Wish I'd had room for the dessert tamales. ;) I like the cozy, divey atmosphere. Just know that this place is super casual, inexpensive & totally un-fancy. You order at the counter and clean up your table when you're done. I was pleasantly surprised that they had a credit card machine & I think there is seating for 12 people total. (They have outdoor seating when the weather is nice, but we visited the day before Thanksgiving.) I will definitely be back and have already recommended this place to a few people.

    (5)
  • Ray N.

The Fish tacos were outstanding. I also had the goat burrito which would of been great but they put lettuce inside it and by the time you eat it, the lettuce is very soggy. I would just ask for it on the side next time.

    (5)
  • Kris P.

Really like these tacos. Extremely small dining room, it has like 2 tables. But they have outdoor seating. This is my favorite mexican food in Grand Rapids. You gotta get the pepper with your tacos.

    (5)
  • Nick K.

Really nothing to add. Neighborhood is a little sketchy and the restaurant is probably 12x5 but all that is trivial when you taste the food. Had tacos 3 ways asada, al pastor, and barbacoa. Steak was my favorite by far but all very delicious, Have to get them supreme. Also the pork tamale was fantastic. Super fresh ingredients very authentic. Fried jalapeno was pretty good. Owner recommends you call ahead to place order so you dont have to wait even though we didnt mind waiting. Brush up on your spanish and enjoy the telemundo! .

They are the best in Grand Rapids. Simply fresh simple ingredients done very well. I love the fish tacos and their tamales are very tasty. I go here alot for lunch and the service is always fast and the always says high. There is a care about what they are doing

literally the best tacos i have ever had in my ENTIRE life. no taco has ever come close and it has left me a dry, bitter shell of a woman. every single thing about them is perfect and beautiful. these tacos have been made in christ's image. i miss u and love u taqueria san jose but we will be together soon i hope

  • Marc L.

Yep, it's legit. I mean, as legit as a white guy can bestow on a authentic mexican joint. Great tacos with onion and cilantro, I've also had the tamales and one burrito. The burrito was least impressive as it seemed a little too "juicy". I don't fault the burrito but i think the moisture in the lettuce was just a bit much. Great sauces and all the tacos served with a slice of lime. I'd def recommend any of the tacos and they seem to have some specials like fish tacos on occasion. All good, all authentic and a very fair price (approx $2 per taco). The place looks like an old drive-in. Staff is very friendly.

Burrito is delicious! And the taco's SHUT UP! Yum! If it was closer to me I'd be there 2-3 times week! Keep it up!

Hands up best authentic tacos in Grand Rapids period. I love this little spot and it gets packed! I recommend the barbacoa and Al Pastor! Anyone who wants authentic tacos must try these!!! Reasonable prices too!

The reviews are accurate!! Fish tacos are amazing...will be back for more. Had the steak, chicken and fish and the fish was BEST! They were all good but fish was spectacular. Both hot sauces were excellent as well, and the squeeze of lime have it that extra flavor.

After reading such good reviews, I had to try this place. I ordered a goat taco and a tongue taco. I almost lack the words appropriate to explain just how GOOD the tacos were. I just finished my tacos and I'm probably going to order a couple more before I leave. I'm very excited about this place. Don't let the appearance of the area or building deter you. It's a gem.

Simple, cheap, and a hole in the wall location. Pretty much exactly what I want from a taqueria. The tacos are amazing, I haven't decided yet but I think they might be better than the taco trucks I used to frequent in North Carolina. The chicken tacos are definitely some of the best I've had - they can be sort of bland especially in comparison to chorizo etc. but theirs were great. So good. So cheap. Just go.

This place is legit! If you are looking for the best, most authentic taqueria in Grand Rapids, this is it. I ordered 3 tacos (chicken, al pastor, and goat) and they all were great. They have a nice assortment of fresh and bottled hot sauce. I put this place up there with some of the taquerias in the Bay Area.

Having lived in San Antonio for 5 years I have high standards for authentic Mexican food so after reading numerous reviews about this place I had to check it out. Ordered 3 asada tacos, all equipped with the standard cilantro, onions, and lime wedges. Absolutely delicious, was full after just 2! My only reason for not giving 5 stars is because my dine in partner did not like her food (menudo) and asked to have it replaced with another item but was told "we don't do that" and did not try to accommodate her. Stick with the tacos and you'll be satisfied, guaranteed.

I had the al pastor tacos. The tortillas were delicious and the meat was pretty good. I was a little confused about how to order them but discovered afterward that you can get them "supreme" (I think) which adds cheese, sour team etc. Mine just came with onions and cilantro, street-style. The cook was cool and asked sincerely if I liked the tacos. I did. I'd go back.

Food: 5/5. Service: 5/5. The most authentic tacos I've ever had. After I eat here I find myself thinking & talking about it for days after. Favorites: chorizo, barbacoa, al pastor. Imported cane sugar Squirt...delicioso!

I ordered three tacos of arracherra and they were pretty good, and the horchata was delicious. I've heard so much about this place that I had to try it. Pretty authentic, and it was delicious, but it wasn't "Wow" delicious.

  • Andrew C.

My wife and I tried La Taqueria San Jose this weekend after reading all of the great reviews. Well I can tell you that the reviews did not lie. These tacos were just what we were looking for, traditional tacos with cilantro and lime in homemade corn tortillas. I personally had the steak, goat, and nopales tacos and while all of them were delicious the goat was my favorite. Definitely worth checking out.

Wonderful. Quality of meat is superior to any other Taqueria in this area. I know it's fresh because tacos are literally flying out the door constantly, as if they are guided by wings directly into the mouths of taco fans everywhere. The Gorditas are the show stealers here. Authentic, takes a few extra minutes, but totally worth it. It's so cheap, I don't know how they do it. Closed Wednesdays. Every Wednesday is a bad day because of this.

The tacos here are absolutely delicious and on par with anything I have had in places like Chicago and San Antonio. I have now tried every taco on the menu and you can't go wrong with any of them. The sauces are clearly fresh and the fried jalapeño is the best in town bar none. Don't let the location or outer appearance deter you from trying this gem. I only wish I lived closer, I would eat here daily.

FIVE STAR PERFECTION OF GREAT LOCAL FOOD! I absolutely LOVE this place! Amazing food for the price and a great authentic atmosphere! The people are all super nice and make sure you leave happy and full, they don't skimp on flavor and authenticity! Try it out for yourself!

Tacos are outstanding and the special fish tacos of the day were larger than the regular tacos and delicious. Just know this is a super casual place that is set up for take out or eating on one of the three small tables inside or one of several covered picnic tables outside.

  • Michelle B.

Tacos al pastor was soooo good and also burrito de carne asada. Also the horchata was amazing beat tacos so far in Grand Rapids. Small place we got our order to go and it was worth the wait. Price was good and the tacos are bigger than the normal ones.

Hole in the wall explosion of delicious flavors. We did not know they were at closing time, also it was a snow storm day no customers. BUT, they welcomed us and happily cooked us authentic Mexican food. Taqueria San Jose remind me the renowned PBS Chef: Rick Bayless's restaurant in Chicago. This restaurant offer the flavor why Bayless inspire for Mexican Cooking. It made us sweat and smile!! This is a perfect e.g. of Great Hole in the wall friendly family restaurant! Thank you yelpers!

I eat at the great taquerias in Chicago frequently. I find GR Mexican restaurants generally lacking authenticity. So I was shocked to have a meal here that was equal in quality to most of Chicago's better taquerias. It really is that good. Absolutely the best in all of West Michigan. The food is truely addictive. The tacos and burritos on the limited menu are excellent and so are the three homemade sauces. There are no tortilla chips here. There is significant heat in the sauces, but it is joined with terrific flavor. No beer here, just jaritos. Chat with the owner who is often cooking, he is a nice guy. The only downside is the ambience: three small tables inside and three picnic tables outside with a spectacular view of lower division street. But if you like great taquerias, they are never in pristine areas of any city.

a really great taco place. I'm not normally a steak taco fan, but their asada is fantastic. really. and who doesn't love horchata. but john b. - I'm guessing you haven't been to too many actual dives. La Taqueria San Jose was small, but clean. It definitely is neither a dump nor a dive. We were glad we found it.

Very best tacos in the US. Closest thing to Mexico. Holds its own against the finest taquerias in NYC, Chicago and LA. Best hidden gem in all of West Michigan. Make sure you get the roasted peppers.

First of all, I have to shout out Yelper Ray B. I read his great review of this place a few months ago, looked at the adjoining pictures, got excited when i realized how close it was to where i live, and went. The tacos are incredible. I haven't even made it to anything else on the menu yet, but the steak & al pastor tacos specifically are some of the best i've ever had. Very basic double corn tortillas, filled with generous portions of meat, onion & cilantro for under $2 per. plus roja and verde sauce on the side, both of which pack heat and are delicious. it just all works together so well. now here's what happened next: i told my brother, who shares my passion for authentic mexican food, about this place. he checked it out a few weeks ago, and got instantly hooked on the al pastor. now, no joke, he's going at least every other day. he's totally hooked. in his own words, "I'm powerless against those tacos." Now on top of THAT, he had my dad try one one night. My dad's never been that into mexican food but my brother gave him one of those al pastor tacos to try a few weeks ago and he LOVED it. It's gotten to the point where he's giving my brother money to make taco runs to Taqueria San Jose. It just makes me smile, because the people running that place deserve it. So thanks for the great review Ray B; this is what Yelp is all about.

Delicious food. The crispy taco shells that are filled generously with tender buttery steak meat. They are topped off with crisp onion and refreshing cilantro squirted with lime juice. Try a topo Chico which is a fizzy soda water that has a fresh crisp taste. the food very good value as well. The only con to this place is it is located on a rougher street.

La Taqueria San Jose may very well have the best Mexican food in Grand Rapids. I moved here several years ago and quickly grew tired of West Michigan's version of Mexican food - bland, flavorless meat wrapped in doughy flour tortillas, drenched in cheese/sauce and served 'wet.' Hole-in-the-wall joints like San Jose were the only source of refuge for me. Maggie's Kitchen held the title for best Mexican in GR for a long time, but things have changed now that I've been to San Jose several times. This place is great for people who like chicken or pork, but it's also great for more adventurous eaters. San Jose offers barbacoa beef cheek, beef tongue, cactus, and goat (among other things); I've had them all, and they're all exceptional. San Jose's ingredients are fresh and very tasty. The horchata (which tastes a little grittier than what you'd find at, say, Cinco de Mayo), is quite enjoyable. San Jose's building is small, a bit run down, and not very aesthetically pleasing. Some of my friends have mistaken it for being dirty, but it's not. It's simply lacking a sparkly, polished facade. And it should be. This is authentic Mexican at its finest in Grand Rapids, and you'd be missing out if you judged this book by its cover.

DONT EVEN BOTHER WITH ANY OTHER MEXICAN FOOD IN GRAND RAPIDS! I am very passionate about this restaurant and the food that they serve. My girlfriend and I eat here every week. Everything on the menu is made from scratch with a lot of love. The family that runs Taqueria San Jose is extremely nice and accommodating. They serve their customers with great care and passion. I would love to have them cater a special event for me in the future. NO OTHER MEXICAN RESTAURANT HAS FIVE STARS ON YELP AND THERE IS A REASON FOR THAT. THE BEST.

  • Chuck A.

There's a reason San Jose has so many great reviews here - best tacos in town. There's no question there. But honestly - not only are they the best tacos in Grand Rapids, they're the best tacos I've had anywhere. I know that sounds like such hyperbole but honestly...they are. I've had to explain San Jose to LA & Chicago friends recently who took me to their favorite spots in those respective cities - and don't get me wrong - there are great tacos there and lots of other places - but the love that Fernando & the rest of the San Jose crew put into their menu has yet to be matched anywhere else for me. If you're new to Grand Rapids or just haven't been to San Jose yet, pick a day (just not a Wednesday) and go. Get yourself 3 tacos - I'd recommend starting with 1 pork, 1 chicken, and 1 steak (but seriously, you can't go wrong with any of them - vegetarian friends (or anyone) can get the cactus - they're great). Get them straight up with just cilantro & onion, squeeze some lime on, squeeze on any/all of the 3 great sauces, and dig in. If you want, try one of them "American style", which will just be the above plus cheese & tomato. Just a preference thing, but my bet is you'll come to love them in their simpler form sans chz/tom. And I mean, where are you going to get a cheaper lunch that tastes this good in town? Wendy's? C'mon. I've had most everything else on their menu too and it's all just amazing - but for me, a few tacos is where it's at. I even had San Jose cater a party last year - 10 of us devoured 60 tacos and easily could have kept going. Oh, and if you're up for it, make sure you get one of the grilled jalapeños and eat bites of it in between bites of your tacos. My goodness....

Great tacos and gorditas. Cool old drive-in. Mostly hispanic folks in the place (good sign) Not sure if our slow arriving food was due to the new staff member that took our order (she told us it was her first day) but people that ordered before us and after us had eaten and left before our tacos were ready (although our food was piping hot and fresh) and our gorditas came out about 15 minutes after our tacos. It seemed that regulars were served before us regardless of arrival time.

Excellent authentic Mexican taqueria not far from my house - it doesn't get any more convenient!! Do not let the location or building keep you from trying this place. Steak tacos with tons of cilantro and onions and pork tamales are my usual choices. Quesadilla is equally delicious.

Really authentic flavors, and just plain delicious. Spartan eating area with just a few indoor tables. I'll be back for some of the best tacos I've tasted.

Authentic. Cheap. AWESOME. Does it get any better? Seriously.. just went with the simple steak tacos for my first time. Just the right amount of onion, cilantro, and steak on two corn tortillas, served with a little wedge of lime and some spicy, but amazing salsa verde and roja - PERFECT. They're set in what feels like a rougher area, but I wasn't worried. People from all walks of life inside, that says it all! Looking forward to trying some other menu items. Give it a shot, you won't be sorry.

If you want authentic tacos, you need to come here. We came here with friends. It's such a cool place. The inside is small, but if it's nice weather, you will take your food outside and eat at picnic tables under the awning (it's an old drive up place, but nobody roller skates). Our friends ordered one of every "protein" option. I prefer my tacos authentic, but there were some supreme (American style) ordered, too. Tamales = good. Tacos = excellent. The 3 sauces in the bottles on the tables are fantastic! I love everything about this place and the people working are SO nice and happily make suggestions and answer questions. We were here on a weeknight, so it wasn't that busy and we didn't have to wait too long. I always get chicken tacos everywhere I go. The chicken here is diced verses shredded. Oh, and the prices are low...so you can have a cheap lunch or dinner. Honestly, this location is fantastic. It helps with the authentic feel (located on Division near Hall. It's sort of across from Salvation Army). Oh, and don't forget about the roasted pepper if you like spice. Yum!

According to the US Census, 99.9% of Mexican restaurants in America are garbage. Taqueria San Jose is so good, they were playing that new Adam Sandler movie "Jack and Jill" (all in Spanish), and I actually enjoyed it. Simple, authentic Mexican food in an old drive through diner; what's not to like? Do yourself a favor and get a steak taco. Or a chorizo one.

  • Emira R.

I went there with a friend a week ago for lunch after reading some reviews on yelp. It seemed to be a not so upscale area of Grand Rapids, it was similar to the surroundings of Detroit in Mexican town. The prices were really cheap, I got 4 tacos and a horchata for under $10. I tried the goat (birria) taco, tongue (lengua) taco), asada taco, and marinated pork taco--all of them with onions and cilantro. They were all delicious and I could have eaten 4 more (not that they weren't enough, just that they were really excellent). The horchata was really nice and refreshing, with quite a hint of cinnamon. My friend had the chicken quesadilla and a veggie taco. She liked her order as well. If I ever went back to Grand Rapids, I'd go to Taqueria San Jose for sure!

Owners/employees= SUPER fun and helpful Location= Nothing to write home about, but who cares when you are chowing on a piping hot, freshly made gordita Food= Absolutely the best Mexican food in Grand Rapids. I have never, ever been less than overjoyed about whatever I have consumed from this little hut of heaven. If someone ever has a problem with this place, they must hate everything in life

Wow. After seeing these reviews, I knew I would like this place. But, I had no idea it would be this great. I got 2 steak tacos and rice/beans. Best I ever had. They have certainly made me a repeat customer!

Alright. This place is phenomenal. I was stationed in San Diego a few years ago and fell in love with authentic Mexican food. I recently moved from Detroit to Grand Rapids and this place is the real deal. Hands down the best Mexican food I have had outside of California. Do not let the looks of the building fool you. People comment about the building condition and what not.... listen. I've been to Mexico three times and have lived in California. This is AUTHENTIC. It's perfect. Everything that I have been looking for. I will be eating here regularly. My only suggestion would be California burritos and carne asada fries!!!

Authentic real Mexican tacos served at what looks like an old A&W drive-thru. Great service, great people running the restaurant. Try the goat!

  • david W.

had a goat taco yesterday, and damn. sooo...... goat, steak, al pastor pork, chicken in that order.

    (5)
  • Jodi W.

Yep, this is it. Authentic, simple, cheap, good. La Taqueria San Jose is built from an old A&W drive in but no one goes outside. Unlike Maggies, who is NEVER open, you will find them there, waiting to take your order 7 days/week. You can dine in - they have 4 tables, maybe 5 max - or you can take it out. I prefer the take out option. All the patrons are speaking Spanish, and you know this is gonna be a good spot when you walk in the door. The tacos, gorditas, buritos and quesadillas are delish with fresh ingredients like cilantro and just the right spice - no need to be smothered in cheese because the other flavors carry the weight. You can get a little "sweet" to take with you, too, as they have interesting treats like sugar sweet potatoes and churros. Everything is made to order, and most dishes are around $2.50-$5.00/each. The only thing missing for me is a tamale - I bet they have them, you just have to know to ask. Next time....

Came here on a whim a month ago when in town on business after viewing Yelp! Whoa! I could not believe how good it was. I had occasion to return this weekend with my wife, a Texan with great appreciation for good Mexican food. She confirmed my impression. It is an across state drive, but we will be back. As it is, we ate there twice in a weekend...

Best tacos in grand rapids! This is a small and cozy space... Nothing fancy, but they do not cut corners on there tacos. Fantastic sauces made in house, housemade corn tortillas, and there meats are cooked perfectly. Give them a shot! Only wish they offered chips.

  • Deb M.

Wow....I seriously don't know where to start . This was an incredible find, thanks to Yelp. We were headed out of town and wanted some place that would be quick. Honestly, when we saw the place we almost drove by. But it does get a lot of Yelp love. I'm SO GLAD we stopped. The staff were very friendly, and it was a nice day so the outdoor seating option worked out fine. We totally over-ordered, and it was still under $20. They have lots of delicious Mexican sodas in the bottle. We started off with chips and salsa and the salsa was delicious! Very fresh tasting and made us excited for our meal to arrive. We had a chicken quesadilla and it was perfectly crisp and had just the right amount of cheese. But the tacos were the star here! Rated in order of preference: Pastor, Asada, Chicken, Chorizo (told you we over-ordered). They also bring out 3 different bottled sauces for the tacos. The green (tomatillo) one was my favorite but they were all very good and added a little something special to an already fantastic taco! I can't wait to come back to this place. Very authentic. Give it a try, you won't be sorry!

Recently stopped by and had a barbacoa burrito' tamales and some tacos. The burrito and tamales were great. But the tacos where smaller and a bit over done. The lengua was tough and the chorizo was chewy. Lengua is supposed to be soft. I typically make my own. I just get tongue and pressure cook it with the right spices. Chop it up and serve it in tortilla with onions, cilantro and lime. Good taco is easy to make. If you don't want to cook your own you can get the meat filling all ready prepared from most of the Mexican "mercados" on weekends. Be there by 10am because they go fast. My favorite is supermercado michoacan on leonard.

Like many Yelpers, I defer to Yelp in times of uncertainty and places unknown. I was in Grand Rapids, MI headed to a wedding in Grand Haven and had a few hours to kill (poor planning, long story). Anywho, this would have been a 5-star review but there was a severe timeliness issue. That aside, everything was great. I arrived at Taqueria San Jose some time after 11:00am, definitely before the lunch rush. When I got there, there was already a line forming at the door. The line went rather quickly since people already knew what they wanted to order. However, the wait for the food was extremely ridiculous. There were tons of people waiting for their food. I must have waited over an hour for 3 tacos. Your best option is to call ahead and order take out. The take out orders seem to be prioritized here, then the walk-in orders are prepared. The long wait was not good. Minus one star. (Though, I was pretty entertained by the Latin soap opera on TV). The food was FANTASTIC! I was really glad that the food was worth the wait. You can't say this about every place you visit but Taqueria San Jose delivered the goods. I ordered three tacos, each individually filled with barbacoa, al pastor, and lengua (in order of preference). This was the BEST barbacoa taco that I have ever had. In my life. It even rivaled the ones at my favorite taco place in Lansing! That's a big deal. The al pastor taco was very delicious, though they did not add the pineapple that is typical of this taco. It was still really good though. Lastly, I was disappointed that the lengua did not have much flavor to it. It was also not cooked the way I like- tender and juicy. It was a bit on the firm side, which I don't tend to like. I would definitely come here again should I have reason to be in the area. However, I would definitely order take out because the super long wait killed my stomach (I was hungry). Nevertheless, the tacos are totally worth the wait (especially the barbacoa taco) so there's that to look forward to when you visit.

Great authentic Mexican food. I opted for the chicken burrito (I know, boring) and my husband got some tacos. Both were great! I need to go back and venture outside of my shell a little with the food. I will say to expect to sit outside in the summer. We went there around 6pm on a Friday and it was getting really busy. Super small and cramped inside. We got there before the rush but still had to wait about 25 minutes for food. That's what I expect for a Friday evening out though-longer waits. We'll be back.

Looking for authentic Mexican food that is fresh and delicious? This is it! The neighborhood and ambiance is a little rough, but the food is really good. Had the Asada taco, Pastor, and my boyfriend had the goat, shredded beef, and steak tacos. All were sooo good! Added onion and cilantro for an added charge. The salsa and chips were freshly made and nice and spicy. Had the iced horchata and the tamarind soda....all for nineteen dollars and change. Friendly service and a line of people waiting to place their orders on a Thursday night. Will go again!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
